Meet Me 10 a.m. Saturday at?

May 4, 2007

MEET ME at Santini's for breakfast 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5 if you can. My treat of course. Santinis is located under the Clocktower opposite Chick Filet. If you can NOT come tomorrow, meet me at the Chick Filet today, Friday at 4 p.m.

You can pick up a "delegate form" if you wish or just visit.

I am writing today to describe a "delegate" and describe a convention.

As teams of volunteers wearing bright orange hats rush through neighborhoods, the Number one question many ask is what is a delegate.

A Delegate is a representative of Republicans based on the relative voting record in Presidential and Governor's races. Sterling is entitled to 235 Republican delegates with each person having at least 1/5th of delegate vote. 1175 people can go to represent Sterling, but it will be more likely 300 people from Sterling.

Each delegate is issued a name tag by the Credentials Committee (get there 9 a.m.) when you register the day of the convention and you are issued one paper ballot to mark your choice for Supervisor or at least the Sherrif's office as well.

WHAT IS A CONVENTION

I have provided some photos below, but the convention is held at the Community Church (capacity 5,000) on Saturday June 9 with the program lasting from 10 a.m. to 12 noon with balloting shortly after. The counting of ballots could take 2 hours due to the various races and procedures. Most delegates leave after they cast their paper ballot. Regular voting machines will be used.

The convention is a wildly enthusiastic and LARGE gathering of supporters of various candidates and brings together factions of the party for a united or unified purpose. Traditionally all candidates and delegates come together after the contest is over. Real Republicans usually do that and most delegates do this even if the one respective candidate does not.

Think of a football stadium where BOTH teams win the game. That's a convention. That's the American model that the Loudoun County Republican Committee has chosen in 2003 and again in 2007.

Many new arrivals to Virginia will go to their first convention. Most delegates treasure the experience.

Delgaudio And Pat Boone. There will be Star Quality at the Convention and Boone may come to the Convention. Wow.

Here are some photos to give you an idea, multiply the Delgaudio Party by thirty to forty times and that is the scale of the county convention!
