BOS Passes 96 Cent Rate

April 4, 2007

Yesterday, Tuesday, April 3, the board of supervisors voted to raise the tax rate from 89 cents to 96 cents as I warned you that they would. I voted "no". Here's an article.

Leesburg Today Article:
7-Cent Rate Increase Approved; Schools To Cut $19 Million (headline)

(quote) The board of supervisors Tuesday attempted a variety of unsuccessful approaches before settling on a 96-cent real estate tax rate, a 7-cent increase that staff members said amounts to slightly more than a one percent tax increase for the average homeowner in the wake of falling property assessments.

Supervisors trimmed little in general county spending from County Administrator Kirby M. Bowers' proposed $1.38 billion budget, but the school board has more work in front of it.......

Supervisor Mick Staton (R-Sugarland Run) proposed adopting an 89-cent rate early on in the meeting, hoping cuts would follow........

Staton's motion fell one vote short of passing, winning support from Supervisors Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling), Jim Clem (R-Leesburg) and Lori Waters (R-Broad Run). " (unquote)
