Gang Member Sentenced to 20 Years in Sexual Attack
Report from CA Jim Plowman

Roberto Anthony Calderon, 25, of Sterling was sentenced Monday, August 9, 2010 for the Rape of a juvenile family member in August 2009. Calderon appeared before the Hon. Herman A. Whisenant in Loudoun County Circuit Court who sentenced Calderon to serve forty years in the Virginia Department of Corrections with twenty years suspended.

Calderon's prior history includes a 2002 conviction in Fairfax County for Malicious Wounding by Mob. This conviction stemmed from a gang related attack at the Reston Town Center in December 2001 where the victim was struck with a tire iron and beer bottles. Calderon served four years in prison for his role in the attack. He and his associates were known members of the MS-13 Criminal Street Gang. Fairfax officials are currently reviewing whether his five year suspended sentence there can be revoked by the courts. Calderon was also convicted in Fairfax County Circuit Court in 1999 for Arson on School Property when he was just 14 years of age.

It's always rewarding when you can remove a dangerous person such as this from the community," said Commonwealth's Attorney Jim Plowman. "Unfortunately, when it comes at the expense of a victim, the victory is a hollow one."

Upon his release, Calderon will be placed on supervised probation and ordered to undergo sex offender and substance abuse treatment. His legal status in the United States is unclear and is currently being reviewed by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.
