Community Meeting May 3

April 26, 2008

County staff, with the encouragement and support of my Sterling District Citizens Council, will be holding two community meetings on plans to revitalize older communities like Sterling. The first one is next Saturday, May 3 at Park View High School from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with an open house from noon to 1:00 p.m.  The second is Wednesday, May 14, again at Park View, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. with an open house from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

25 citizens are needed to attend these meetings from Sterling to make a difference. 19 citizens have said they are coming. Are there six more citizens to reach the goal of at least 25 citizens on May 3?

Sad news, the Sheriff's Office is investigating a reported sexual assault that allegedly occurred early Sunday morning in the Sterling area.
The victim told authorities she was sexually assaulted inside her residence in the Newberry area by an unknown subject. The incident occurred around 12:30 AM. There were no signs of forced entry into the residence.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male between 20 and 30-years-of age. The Loudoun Sheriff's Office has released a composite sketch of the suspect.

50 Sterling citizens have signed up for two upcoming Republican events. On May 17 there will be the Republican district convention at Langley High school in McLean, Va. And on Saturday May 31 the Republican state convention will pick the state chairman and U.S. Senate candidate Robert Marshall to run against millionaire Mark Warner. The Annual Good Scout Dinner will be held on the evening of May 22nd, this time over at the new National Conference Center Ballroom and Eagle Scout Hobie Mitchel will be the Master of Ceremonies. The good scout award goes to Bill Dean, Sterling's appointee to the Route 28 Tax District. Congratulations to Bill Dean for getting this singular recognition. On Sterling Boulevard in total there will be 235 plantings, with a majority of those being Tuskegee Crapemyrtle, Kwanzan Cherry, Yoshino Cherry, Red Maple, Willow Oak, and Liberty Elm trees. This number also includes various other ornamental grasses, trees, and shrubs.

According to the contractor, Poole Landscaping of Frederick, MD, the work should take only six business days to complete. They estimate that this will occur by the end of April which is coming soon.

In order to do this in the Spring it must be done by May 30 or the landscaper will miss the Spring planting season. Let me know if anybody sees workers doing this.

There is money left over from phase one and it is possible that pledges of money and support secured by me will be enough to get phase two done. It is possible that 4 miles of Sterling Boulevard could be trees in the next 12 months.

Discussions are near completion for filing an application for grant funds to fully landscape Sterling Boulevard for a phase 3 and 4 over the next 2 years. I hope you are not tearing up over this. Waiting for this to happen is hard on all of us.
