Working for You

October 31, 2004

Please vote this Tuesday. Polls are open 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. I will be sending some other materials in a separate message, but I wanted to quickly let you know I have been working hard for the last two weeks.

I just got back from an all day meeting. There has been a program by program review to give the county administrator some direction in preparing next year's budget and most Supervisors have been working long hours this past Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights and all day today, Saturday. And I have not missed a minute either.

I have prepared long portfolios of suggested ideas where government programs can reduce, eliminate or privatize to save millions of dollars.

Most of the time, I am getting little encouragement.

>>>MILLIONS IN PLANNED REDUCTIONS

But today, most Supervisors agreed, in principle, to reduce tax funding for the Parks and Recreation program by $1.6 million.

After a short presentation that I made today: There is also an agreement to form a Loudoun County Park Foundation to begin the effort to fund the parks with private monies like they do in New York and Fairfax Counties. Localities all over fund 50 to 85 per cent of their operating funds with private donations. This could result in many millions in savings to the taxpayer.

Here's a listing of the news items reporting some of my other work in recent weeks. There is a lot more being discussed, of course. Here are some published reports .

I promise not to let these favorable reports confuse my humble place as a servant to you.

Any "media" recognition (or attacks!)for work that I am doing is due solely to you voting for me and re-electing me. If you do not have time now, just save this e-newsletter to go over the articles and links later. Thank you.

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors this week voted to formally urge Dominion Virginia Power to abandon plans to construct high voltage electric lines and towers south of Leesburg, asking instead that the lines be buried along Route 7.

.....The motion to formally urge Dominion Virginia Power to submit the Route 7 corridor plan to the State Corporation Commission was passed 9-0. Eugene Delgaudio (R-Sterling) said he voted with the majority in order to present a united front to state regulators and Dominion Virginia Power, but does not think the company and its customers should have to take pay the higher cost to bury power lines.

I am for the change in alignment, but I oppose the concept of burying the lines at all costs,Delgaudio said. If you raise the rates to protect the scenic viewsheds, you raise the rates on everybody, including my constituents in Sterling Park.

The sheriff's office program that attracted the most attention was Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE). Delgaudio made it clear that he thinks the program, which requires $56,000 in funding and six deputies at $443,000, is a waste of money. He provided a thick binder of materials to all who attended the meeting that included statistics and articles on how the DARE program may not be helpful to students.
