SCHOOL CLOSED

January 5, 2003

Channel 9 WUSA TV is reporting Loudoun County Schools are closed Monday, January 6, 2003 due to the snow.

I do not recommend driving unless it is necessary. You have gotten 2 other e-mails on that today.

For those of you who were planning on attending the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors meeting, it has been the custom of the Board of Supervisors not to conduct official meetings when schools have been closed due to the same reasons that the schools are closed, that it is not safe.

In fact, board worksessions planned for Thursday, Dec. 5 and Saturday, Dec. 7 were cancelled due to snow.

(side note: While I missed the worksession on December 9, I can take "comfort" in the fact that the official records record me as voting NO, several times!

This was noticed and a correction to the official record arrived 10:30 p.m. Friday night, that, indeed, since I was not at the Dec. 9 worksession, that my "no" votes could not have taken place.)

I have spoken to Chairman York and he has told me that the first time ever meeting of 7:30 a.m. will go on as planned and the 9 a.m. public comment will go on as planned.

I disagree with Chairman York and this board about the earlier then normal meeting. I think it is an attempt to do in early sessions out of the ordinary course of business what can be done during regular hours.

I disagree with having an official meeting "as planned" when there are unsafe conditions on the road and the public should be encouraged to stay safe.

Therefore, I do not recommend going to the Board of Supervisors meeting in the morning for the public comment period as a.) it is not safe , b.) since the meeting has not been cancelled, I will make point a.) (it is not safe) on your behalf .

If you decide to go to Leesburg for the public comment period it will be because you decided to go in spite of the road conditions I am warning about. For whatever reason, if you decide to go to Leesburg, there will be plenty of parking in the government parking garage (next to the government building) has been cleared of "all" government cars to make room for the public --- which will be much less due to the snow.

I plan on being there, in Leesburg for this early morning meeting. And for the regular meeting and public comment as well.
