BOY SCOUTS VISIT MOST OF STERLING

November 5, 2005

Thank you all for helping me this morning. I am taking a short break and
going out again to help the local candidates.

>>>ELECTION DAY 2005

Can you join me at Forest Grove elementary school at 6 AM to 9 AM
Tuesday, November 8 on election day to help me hand out the sample
Republican Ballot. Let me know if you can join me 6 to 9 a.m. for an
hour or join me 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the afternoon and early evening.
Thank you.

More going on:

>>>BOY SCOUTS PLAN ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE

ââ'¬Å"Local Area Scouts to Collect Food for Needy Familiesââ'¬Â

A Scout is helpful. Itââ'¬â"¢s the third point of the Scout Law and part of
the impetus behind the annual ââ'¬Å"Scouting for Foodââ'¬Â drive. Boy Scouts,
throughout Loudoun County, will be distributing food collection bags to
many homes in the county on Saturday, November 5
and 6, 2005.

>>> PICK UP NEXT SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12

Residents are asked to take the plastic bags and fill them with food and
place them next to their front doors by 9:00 a.m. on the morning of
Saturday, November 12.

Please donate non-perishable food items only. Boy Scouts will be
collecting non-perishable holiday food, yams, cranberry sauce, stuffing
mix, pie crust mix and fillings, canned meat, soups, canned and powdered
milk, dry pastas, canned fruits and vegetables, dry cereals, canned
pastas, dessert mixes and more.

This makes a big impact on 1,000 families in Loudoun and 273 families in
Sterling Park.

>>> ORANGE POSTCARD IN STERLING PARK
>>> VOTE NO ON WESTERN LOUDOUN HS AT FIELDS FARM

Please look for an orange post card from me concerning the one school
bond that I oppose out of 50 in the last 5 years. There is just so much
spending on schools that as someone who has supported the schools year
after year, I just have to say no to this one.

>>> FIELDS FARM COST U$ BIG TIME

I opposed the purchase of the Fields Farm for many reasons including the
fact that Loudoun paid one million dollars over the real estate multiple
listing (the price was listed at $2.5 million and taxpayers paid $3.5
million to purchase the land).

>>> NO SEWER OR WATER

Now the school board is asking for a high school (the Western Loudoun
Area High School) at a site where there is no sewer or water and the
town of Purcelleville says they will not provide it. This means a pump
and haul system costing $2 million will have to be installed.

>>> NO ROAD SYSTEM!

And there is no road system at the Fields Farm site so a $17 million
road system will have to be constructed and some experts say the road
system alone for this Western Loudoun HS, at this site, could cost $25
million.

That's my opinion and also the opinion of several major observers who
have written against the Western Loudoun HS project in letters and
editorials.

NEW STUDY JUST OUT
>>>Schools Can Save Billions Sharing Services

In many parts of the country 40 to 50 percent of education funding never
makes it to the classroom. A new report by Reason Foundation finds that
saving just a quarter of the tax dollars spent by school districts on
non-instructional operations could save $9 billion.

>>>900 NEW SCHOOLS OR 150,000 NEW TEACHERS

To put this number in perspective, it is equivalent to 900 new schools
or more than 150,000 additional teachers. ââ'¬Å"School funding and per pupil
spending are always hot-button issues,ââ'¬Â said Lisa Snell, co-author of
the report. ââ'¬Å"Sharing services gives schools and districts a great
opportunity to send a lot more money straight to classrooms, where it
belongs.
